NYC Weekend Bead Trip
Most of my pictures are all from the very beginning of our trip when we first arrived. After about 5 minutes of those fridged New York temperatures, the enthusiasm for pictures was quickly lost! Check out Lori , Kelley and Nancy on their blogs for more details on our trip and PICTURES! When we were in the bead shops, I was pretty focused on the BEADS, what I was going to get and how much I was spending, so sorry, no pictures of the bead shops either, but at least I can show you what I came home with and that’s all that really matters anyway, right? Right! So, without further ado, here’s the tour of the NY bead stash! Our first stop was Tinsel Trading Company ! This shop was beautiful! It was filled with many vintage treasures and stocked from floor to ceiling with a vast array of trims and ribbons! It seems very strange that I didn’t get any ribbon there, but I think I was just overwhelmed with the selection! Lorelei shopping at Tinsel Trading Company. Here’s what I did get there.

Inspiration I: Glass Beads
Inspiration comes from a variety of sources. I’m going to explore some of what inspires me in the weeks to come. Here’s a post I wrote a few years back for another blog group with some updates and new thoughts. When I first started making jewelry, it was at a local bead shop that closed in the evening. Small groups of friends could come in after hours, string beads, drink wine and share chitchat. It was just for fun then, but I knew that I enjoyed the activity and I was drawn to the different materials: the intricacies of Bali silver beads; the shapes, colors and textures of freshwater pearls; and, at that time, natural stones and semiprecious stones. I didn’t really think about inspiration though. It was a form of relaxing for meto clear my mind of rigid computer-related stuff. The inspiration came later. Over 7 years ago I discovered lampwork beads.

a new beading partner
An exciting thing happened over the weekend… my little girl was invited to a birthday party at a bead shop, and the activity was making a necklace! She’s now TOTALLY hooked on making jewelry! My jewelry and beading supplies have been in our computer/playroom for several years… right at my daughter’s disposal, yet she never really was “into” making jewelry. That is, until this weekend. Needless to say, I did a major destash and she is thrilled! Now we’re all set for those hazy, hot & humid days this summer when the noontime heat keeps us inside. I have some new items arriving in my etsy shop , including the two bracelets on this post. I’m also working on a new journal. I am also offering free domestic shipping on all my journals and jewelry until this Wednesday. ;) Happy Monday!

NYC Weekend Bead Trip
Some vintage metal sequins and a vintage metal button. Next stop, Phoenix Stone & Beads Imports, Inc. Probably the best deals on stones at this bead store! Very nice people. It’s wholesale, but if you pay cash they will let anyone shop. Strands of metallic pearls, dyed agate, florite, turquoise, blue crazy lace agate and not sure what stone the purple teardrops are. Next, was City Beads ! This store had an amazing selection of Czech glass beads and seed beads! Very nice and helpful staff. Some great quality wood beads and a selection of Czech glass. Next, Toho Shoji ! A Japanese bead shop! I love experiencing foreign ideas and concepts. It’s especially exciting to see what’s going on in the jewelry world outside the US. I really enjoyed this store. They had all kinds of different beads. I ended up buying this book on wire mesh ribbon lace. It’s all in Japanese! I can’t read a word, lol! It’s full of pictures of jewelry, though and that’s enough!

A 2nd Etsy Shop ? … Oh Bother !!!
Iwould really love to open a second shop on Etsy but I find the idea of having to open another email account to do so a big turn off. Etsy admin says they’re going to be working on a feature that will allow us to have multiple shops under one email account, however the question is “When?” The last few days I’ve been preoccupied with doing seed bead jewelry and when I pick up my beading needle and seed beads it becomes like an addiction. I become consumed with the desire to complete the project and find it hard for me to break away from my creation. Busy as a bee I completed not one but 4 beaded rope necklaces. This Sapphire Blue and Dark Garnet Beaded Rope is one I would love to post on Etsy but since my only shop is a Beading and Jewelry Making Supplies shop I don’t want to saturate it with my handcrafted jewelry. Photo above…Beaded Rope Necklace made with small 3mm glass beads. Photo above…The beaded rope is very flexible and has my unique hand beaded ring and loop clasp. Photo above…

Organization, school work and beading
I went to a nursing mother’s group and it was very helpful. I was crushed when it was closed for things like15 inches of snow. So research is fun. Which is good that I have this belief otherwise I would be in bad shape. So, as far as school goes, I am off to the races. I still have a lot of projects I want to finish in the jewelry department of my home. Yesterday a friend came over with her children for me to teach them how to string beads and crimp them and such. I put out all my beads for their use and noticed, I own a small bead shop! My friend was suppose to pick up crystal beads for the kids but did not make it to the craft shop so I told her, “no worries just reimburse me for my beads if they use the expensive ones.” So the kids had a great time. They are both 11 year old girls. My friend thinks I should offer bead classes for kids during the summer. My SIL had come up with the same idea last Christmas when I was wire wrapping sea glass with her kids.

Organize Your Beading Stuffs
To keep beads and baubles organized, sort them out according to their sizes and colours. This is a straightforward way to help find and pick beads you would like when you need them. This is one way also of organizing left over beads after finishing a certain project or after purchasing loose beads from a shop. Beading for every age is great fun and being organized will help everyone enjoy it without becoming frustrated when trying to find something.

New Shop Goodies…
This is the homestretch for raising money for the opening of Allegory Gallery. We’ve raised approximately 46% of the original goal of the fundraiser. I think that’s mighty impressive considering the outside factors, like hurricanes and earthquakes amongst other things. In an attempt to push up the dollar amount as much as possible (you know, for things like tables and chairs) I’ve listed lots of things in my Shop. It is probably one of the last updates like this before the transition. In a few weeks, I will be eliminating almost all of the beads from my Shop and moving lots of stuff over to the forthcoming Allegory Gallery Online Store. When we make the move, I’ll be discontinuing several of my personal designs and liquidating some of the stock into inventory for the physical location. So, for example, some of the pieces from the Skull Shop (which will also say goodbye shortly) will only be available in person.

Minnesota Trip: Baseball and Beads and Beer, Oh My!
Last weekend, my husband and I went to Minneapolis. You see, he love baseball, and has been to every major league baseball stadium. But now, they are replacing some of the old ones, so he gets to go back to check out the new stadiums! It is very fun to pop into a city for a game. The last one we did together was St. Louis, so I was excited about this one too! in the big baseball glove! This was a big shimmering wall made of little squares of metal on hinges, so when the breeze blew, the metal would looks like water or smoke. Hard to describe, but very cool. Yay Baseball! And after the game is over, we get to check out I drag him through sculpture gardens, modern art museums, and bead shops. Everybody wins! Mary Tyler Moore statute. Love it! Frank Gehry “Standing Fish” made with glass. I *heart* Frank Gehry The tail end. cool, huh! Calder sculpture Spoonbridge and Cherry This was at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Look! Chihuly!
